Connecting an AI assistant with MCP

Team Today has a built-in MCP server, so an AI assistant such as Claude can look up who is in the office, on which days, without anyone leaving the chat.

MCP (the Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants call tools in other products. Team Today exposes a small, read-only set of tools over MCP. Once connected, you can ask things like "Who is in the London office on Thursday?" or "Is Priya working from home tomorrow?" and the assistant answers from live Team Today data.

What the assistant can do

The Team Today MCP server is read-only. It cannot change whereabouts, book desks or edit users. It currently offers three tools:

  • List offices returns your company's offices, floors and areas.
  • Who is in the office lists the people in a given office on a given date, for the morning and the afternoon.
  • Get a person's whereabouts returns one person's AM and PM status (office, home, holiday and so on) on a given date, looked up by email address.

Every request is scoped to your company. An assistant connected to your account can only see the same data you can see in Team Today.

Before you start

  • You need to be a Company Admin to switch the integration on and to manage API keys. See Setting permissions.
  • MCP is currently available as an early access feature. If you cannot see the setting described below, get in touch and we will enable it for your company.
  • Your AI assistant needs to support remote MCP servers. Claude (web, desktop and Claude Code) does. Many other tools do too, including Cursor and ChatGPT.

Step 1: Enable the MCP integration

  1. Go to Settings > Company.
  2. Open the Other tab.
  3. Switch on MCP integration.

Until this switch is on, Team Today rejects every MCP request for your company, even with a valid login or API key. Switching it off again is an instant kill switch for all connected assistants.

Step 2: Connect your assistant

The server address is the same for every client:

https://api.team-today.com/mcp

There are two ways to authenticate. Most people should use the first.

Option A: Sign in with your Team Today account (recommended)

This is the right choice for a person using Claude or another chat assistant. The assistant acts as you, and access stops if you are removed from the company.

  1. In Claude, open Settings > Connectors and choose Add custom connector. In other assistants, look for "MCP servers" or "Integrations".
  2. Give it a name such as Team Today and paste the server address above.
  3. Choose Connect. Your browser opens a Team Today page asking you to allow the connection. Sign in if prompted.
  4. Choose Allow. You are sent back to the assistant and the connector shows as connected.

Any user in a company with MCP switched on can connect this way. You do not need to be an admin to connect your own assistant.

Option B: Use a company API key

Use this for automations, scripts or an internal assistant that runs on a server rather than for one person. The key represents your whole company, so treat it like a password.

  1. Go to Settings > Company > API Keys.
  2. Under Public API key, add a label (for example Office assistant) and choose Generate.
  3. Copy the secret key straight away. It is shown once and cannot be retrieved later.
  4. Configure your MCP client to send the key in an x-api-key header with every request.

Most MCP clients accept a JSON configuration like this:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "team-today": {
      "url": "https://api.team-today.com/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "x-api-key": "YOUR_SECRET_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

The same key also works for the Team Today public REST API. If you do not see the Public API key section, it has not been enabled for your company yet. Get in touch and we will turn it on.

Step 3: Try it out

Ask your assistant something that needs Team Today data. Good first questions are:

  • "Which offices do we have in Team Today?"
  • "Who is in the Manchester office this afternoon?"
  • "Is sam@example.com in the office on Friday?"

The assistant will call the relevant tool and reply with the result. Dates are worked out by the assistant, so "tomorrow" and "next Monday" both work.

Limits and privacy

  • Requests are rate limited to 120 per minute for each connected user or API key. An assistant that goes over this limit is asked to slow down and retries automatically.
  • Data is only ever read. Nothing an assistant does through MCP changes anything in Team Today.
  • Access for a signed-in user stops as soon as that user is deleted or their access is revoked in Team Today.
  • Switching off MCP integration blocks every request for the company immediately.

Removing access

  • For one person: remove the connector from their assistant. To be certain, an admin can also revoke the user's access in Team Today.
  • For an API key: go to Settings > Company > API Keys and choose Revoke. Any client using that key stops working straight away.
  • For the whole company: switch off MCP integration under Settings > Company > Other.

Troubleshooting

"This feature is not enabled" or the assistant reports a 403 error. MCP integration is switched off for the company. A Company Admin needs to turn it on under Settings > Company > Other.

The assistant reports a 401 error or "invalid credentials". The API key is wrong, has been revoked, or is missing from the request headers. Generate a new key and update the client.

The Allow page says the integration is not enabled for your company. Ask a Company Admin to switch on MCP integration, then connect again.

Nothing happens after choosing Allow. Make sure you finished signing in to Team Today in the browser window that opened, then try the connection again from the assistant.

Still stuck? Get in touch and include the name of the assistant you are using and the exact error message.
