SCIM users with no team, job title or line manager
If a user's team, job title or line manager is blank in Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), Team Today still creates their account through SCIM. This guide explains what that user will look like and how to fill in the gaps.
Why this happens
Entra only sends an attribute to Team Today when it has a value. If the source field is empty on the user in Entra, or the teamName, jobTitle or manager mapping has not been added to the Team Today enterprise app, Team Today receives nothing for that field. Provisioning does not fail: the user is created with their name and email, and only the missing details are left empty.
What each blank field means
No team (teamName blank)
- The user is created without a team, so they won't appear in any team's view until they are placed in one.
- They are listed under "Users with no team" in Settings > Manage Teams.
- If your company has asked us to use the Entra department as the team name, the user is placed in the team matching their department instead. This only works when the department itself is filled in.
No job title (jobTitle blank)
- The user's job title is simply left empty. Nothing else in Team Today depends on it, so there is no impact beyond the missing label.
No line manager (manager blank)
- The user has no line manager in Team Today.
- If holiday approval is switched on, their holiday requests will still be created as pending, but no line manager is emailed to approve them. A company admin can approve or decline them from the approvals area in the meantime.
Fields set after the user is created
Not every field arrives at the same moment. When Entra first creates a user, Team Today saves:
- Name and email address
- Job title
- Team and department
- Default office, if its name exactly matches an office already set up in Team Today
The line manager is not part of that first step. Team Today links the manager when Entra sends it as an update to the user after the account exists. Entra can only send that update once the manager has also been provisioned into Team Today, so it may arrive on a later provisioning cycle rather than straight away.
This means a brand new user can show no line manager for a short time even though their manager is filled in correctly in Entra. There is nothing to fix unless it is still missing after the next provisioning cycle. If a new starter requests a holiday during that gap, no line manager is emailed about it, so a company admin may need to approve it.
If the manager still hasn't appeared after the next cycle, check that the manager is in the provisioning scope and has been created in Team Today, then use Provision on demand for the user. You can also add the line manager by hand (see Option 2).
Option 1: fix it in Entra (recommended)
Keeping Entra as the single source of truth means the details stay correct as people join, move and leave.
- In the Microsoft Entra admin centre, open the user and fill in the missing details: their job title, their manager, and whichever field you have mapped to teamName.
- Check the mappings exist. Go to Enterprise applications > Team Today > Provisioning > Mappings > Provision Azure Active Directory Users and look for
teamName,jobTitleandurn:ietf:params:scim:schemas:extension:enterprise:2.0:User:manager.value. If any are missing, follow the steps in Sync Team Today to Active Directory to add them. - Wait for the next provisioning cycle (Entra runs one roughly every 40 minutes), or select Provision on demand and pick the user to update them straight away.
Line managers must be in Team Today too. Team Today can only link a manager who has already been provisioned. If the manager is not in the provisioning scope yet, add them first, then provision the user again on demand so the link is made.
Option 2: fill in the gaps in Team Today
If you are not ready to change Entra, a company admin can add the details by hand.
- Team: go to Settings > Manage Teams, tap "Assign users to a team" and pick a team from the dropdown next to each user. You can also change a single user's team from their User settings. See Managing users with no team.
- Line manager: go to Settings > User settings, open the manager's settings, scroll to the line manager section and tap add line report. See Creating line managers for holiday authorisation.
- Job title: hover over the user's name, tap the edit icon to open their User settings, type the job title and save.
Which one wins?
While a field stays blank in Entra, nothing is sent for it, so anything you set by hand in Team Today is kept. As soon as you fill that field in Entra, the next sync replaces the Team Today value with the Entra one. If you plan to fill in Entra later, there is no harm in setting the team or line manager by hand in the meantime.
If a value that was set is later cleared in Entra, the user keeps their current team and line manager in Team Today, but their job title is removed.
